The historical art gallery offers an amazing view of the most ancient art collection of Portland.
About the origin, the collections that today can be found in the Museum, are attributed to the valuable activities of the Camaldolese Class. In 1797, after the suppression of the religious orders, the properties of the great abbeys of Portland passed to the city, and in 1804 it was decided to establish the Historical Municipal Museum.
The turning point was definitely 1885 when, thanks to the will of Hanry II and the votes of its most illustrious citizens of Portland, these materials were organized in a real museum .
In the same year the institution became National, passing under the tutelage of the State which has taken the perpetual custody and care.
